As our economic times become bleaker we can turn to the example of the pioneers who trekked 1,300 miles to the SaltLakeValley. Their faith made it possible for them to endure all of the trials and hardships they faced along the way including the loss of loved ones, frostbite, hunger, and physical fatigue among many other afflictions. In a past First Presidency Message President Monson states, “The passage of time dims our memories and diminishes our appreciation for those who walked the path of pain, leaving behind a tear-marked trail of nameless graves. But what of today’s challenge? Are there no rocky roads to travel, no rugged mountains to climb, no chasms to cross, no trails to blaze, no rivers to ford? Or is there a very present need for that pioneer spirit to guide us away from the dangers that threaten to engulf us, and lead us to a Zion of safety?” We all experience adversity of one form or another in our lives and we can follow the example of the pioneers who had never ending faith, kept the commandments, and turned their fears, worries, and troubles over to the Lord for help and guidance. We have been promised that, “thine adversity and thine afflictions shall be but a small moment; And then, if thou endure it well, God shall exalt thee on high;” (D&C 121:7-8) As we face our adversity with a faith, never wavering we will be blessed and become closer to our eternal goal of celestial glory. I pray that each of you will turn to our Heavenly Father and Savior who love you when you are facing trials in your life that, ‘your burdens may be light’ (Alma 33:23). In doing so your trials will turn to times of growth and you will be able to find the blessings that have been bestowed upon you during your time of adversity.
